Monday’s front pages are dominated by the World Cup in Qatar which has finally begun – with the first game seeing the host nation lose 2-0 to Ecuador.
Wales and England both play their first matches on Monday – against USA and Iran. Captain Harry Kane is featured in most of the morning papers.
England vs Iran – Qatar world cup
“Lions of Arabia,” says the headline on the front page of The Sun– which gives its entire front splash to the World Cup. The paper says Captain Harry Kane has pledged to end 56 years of World Cup hurt. But there are concerns over Kane having his rainbow armband removed.
The Daily Star likens the England striker to Superman,; while the Metro reports on the stunt by comedian Joe Lycett – who is pictured shredding £10,000 in protest against David Beckham’s role as World Cup ambassador.
Swiss-style deal with EU
The i reports on Ecuador fans celebrating their win but its main story is on Tory MPs warning against reports of a fresh relationship with the EU – similar to the one Switzerland has with the bloc.
The Daily Express quotes Jacob Rees Mogg as saying it was an “absurd idea” and would render trade deals with other countries “ineffective.”
The Telegraph says the PM has moved to quell the backlash, saying No 10 rejected the suggestions of a Swiss-style deal as “categorically untrue.”
According to the Financial Times, the business sector is to urge PM Sunak to “do the deal” with the EU in order to soften the economic effects of Brexit, including opening the door to more immigration to fill holes in the labour market.
