Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Most of Monday’s front pages lead with an image of the Queen attending the finale to the Royal Windsor Horse Show – a Platinum Jubliee Event. In politics, the lead stories are the PM’s threats to rip up key sections of the Brexit deal on Northern Ireland and police accusing Prate Patel of trying to obtain new powers without parliamentary approval. The cost of living, NATO and the US mass shooting that killed 10 black New Yorkers make the front pages.
Writing in the Belfast Telegraph, PM Boris Johnson tells the EU the door is “open to genuine dialogue” on Northern Ireland’s trade rules but if that doesn’t change its position there will “be a necessity to act.”
The Daily Express’s lead story suggests the prime minister is warning that he’ll “rip up the Brexit deal within days” unless Brussels agrees to “sensible changes”.
Whilst the i accuses the PM of “trying to have his cake and eat it” by calling for calm whilst trying to provoke the EU.
The Guardian says it could be weeks before a bill is put before MPs whilst government sources tell the Times that the draft law is designed only as an “insurance policy.”
The Guardian leads with an accusation by police chiefs that the home secretary Priti Patel has made a “power grab.” The chief constables and police crime commissioners have criticised a proposal which would enable the cabinet minister to intervene in local law enforcement matters, saying it threatens their “operational independence.”. A source close to her denies it’s a power grab, the paper says.
A picture of the Queen features of many front pages as she attended a performance put on by the Royal Windsor Horse Show to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee. The Sun says the Queen was “all smiles,” the Mirror says she had a “royal giggle.”
Monday’s papers also feature an image of Margaret Thatcher’s new statue that was hit with eggs within 20 minutes of being installed.
The Mirror’s lead delves into what it calls the “sick obsession” of the US supermarket killer with UK towns and court cases. It says killer Payton Gedron (who shot dead 10 people in New York) wanted London Mayor Sadiq Khan to be murdered.
For the Metro, the paper leads with Ukraine’s Eurovision win. The paper quotes Zelensky who promised his country can host next year. “Our courage impresses the world, our music conquers Europe,” he’s quoted as saying in the paper.
