The Sims 4 – that’s a lot of Simming (pic: EA)
EA has shared some yearly statistics for 2022, with The Sims 4, Apex Legends, and FIFA 23 its most successful games.
As 2022 draws to a close, Sony isn’t the only gaming company reflecting back on the year with a digital retrospective. EA has also put together its yearly recap to share its own statistics.
Apparently, EA has enjoyed growth throughout the last 12 months, with an increase in players worldwide. Although ironically, the company can attribute part of its success to The Sims 4, which released almost 10 years ago in 2014.
Despite how old it is, the game has remained incredibly popular, with its player-base apparently spending a collective 1.4 billion hours on it. Not overall, but just in 2022.
On top of that, EA says that 18.5% more Sims characters were created this year compared to 2021. So, The Sims 4 has only grown in popularity as time has gone on.
This can at least partially be chalked up to the game going free-to-play, although that only happened in September. Around the same time, EA pledged to release more DLC packs for it, obviously aware of how popular The Sims 4 still is.
It also makes sense since the next iteration of The Sims – currently titled Project Rene – is still very early in development and at least a few years away from launch.
A less surprising detail was that EA’s FIFA series remains its most popular sport franchise, something that was likely emboldened by FIFA 23 launching just a couple months before the World Cup.
It’ll be interesting to see if the series maintains its momentum in 2023 since FIFA 23 is the last game to use the FIFA license. Going forward, it’ll be rebranded to EA Sports FC, while the FIFA organisation will make its own FIFA 24 with a new partner.
Apex Legends, meanwhile, is EA’s most popular non-sports franchise, although EA hasn’t shared much in the way of player statistics. Apart from the fact that ‘GG’ was used in-game over 9 million times in September alone.
