This is Los Santos Drug Wars not GTA 6 (pic: Rockstar Games)
Fans almost thought their dreamt of moment was finally here, and Rockstar had started teasing GTA 6, but it’s actually just GTA Online DLC.
At some point between now and the heat death of the universe Rockstar Games will announce Grand Theft Auto 6, but anyone that tells you they know exactly when is lying.
The best guess is that the game will be out in 2024 or 2025, which probably means the first teaser trailer somewhere towards the middle of next year. That really is just a guess, though, as other than confirming the game exists Rockstar has said nothing else about it.
What they have done though is post a mysterious video on Twitter, with no indication of what it’s for, which is exactly how they handled the Red Dead Redemption 2 reveal. This isn’t GTA 6 though, or any other new game, it’s just the Los Santos Drug Wars expansion for GTA Online.
To be fair, the tweet doesn’t offer any explanation for what it’s about and while its psychedelic colours – like Doctor Who on an acid trip – don’t scream GTA 6 there’s nothing that says that’s not what it is.
However, the same video on YouTube makes it all much clearer. There, the exact same video is labelled ‘Expand Your Mind with GTA Online: Los Santos Drug Wars, Now Available.’ So that’s that.
The enduring popularity of GTA Online is the primary reason why GTA 6 is taking so long, since the original won’t stop selling and Rockstar would only be doing themselves out of easy money if they cut short its sales.
Much of that longevity is due to the steady stream of expansions for GTA Online, with the Los Santos Drug Wars one being the start of a new multi-part story that includes six new story missions, as you set up a new drugs cartel in Southern San Andreas.
It is, as the trailer says, out now, and free to download as long as you already own Grand Theft Auto 5.
