That really is a great wave (pic: Lego)
A new Lego Art set recreates the iconic Great Wave off Kanagawa but with 3D elements that send the classic art print into another dimension.
The whole point of Lego is that you can make anything you want out of it and that’s never been more obvious than with some recent sets aimed at adults, that includes everything from a working typewriter to a range of customisable art displays – including an Elvis tribute and a recreation of Van Gogh’s The Starry Night.
Starry Night was so successful that Lego has created a new set based on another great work of art, in this case the 19th century classic The Great Wave off Kanagawa by Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai.
Rather than being a purely flat recreation of the original woodwork print, the Lego version of The Great Wave is three-dimensional, with the foam of the waves and the boatmen emerging out of the canvas as separate Lego pieces.
The set also comes with an illustrated instruction booklet explaining the context of the original artwork and its creator, plus there’s a special soundtrack you can listen to as you build it.
Naturally, the Lego Art sets are aimed more at kids than adults but that’s entirely the point, with Lego pointing to a recent report which suggests that 93% of adults regularly feel stressed and that 80% are looking for new ways to unwind and relax.

That’s where Lego and the special soundtrack come in, with the 1,810 piece set resulting in a picture and frame that’s 52 cm high and 39 cm wide (20.5 inches by 15.5).
There’s even special hanger elements that allow you to mount the finished design on your wall, just like the real thing.
Hokusai – The Great Wave (set number 31208) is available now for £89.99 from Lego stores and the Lego.com website.
