Low wages under Tories have pushed 900,000 UK children into poverty, report finds

The crisis of poverty that has taken root in the UK over the past 14 years has been laid bare in two reports that reveal the devastating effects low wages and price increases on the lives of 900,000 children. With both main parties proposing tough welfare spending plans, reports have highlighted the link between rising child poverty and slow wage growth under five Conservative governments since 2010 – the slowest growth since the second world war. The Princess Royal is in hospital with a head injury and concussion after an incident in which she was understood to have been injured by a horse. Princess Anne, 73, suffered concussion and minor injuries, thought to possibly have been caused by being either headbutted or kicked by a horse on her estate at Gatcombe Park in Gloucestershire on Sunday. She is being kept in hospital for treatment, tests and observation. Buckingham Palace said in a statement: “The Princess Royal has sustained minor injuries and concussion following an incident on the Gatcombe Park estate yesterday evening. US police officer blocked man’s plan to abduct and kill Holly Willoughby, court told

A convicted violent offender planned to kidnap, rape and murder Holly Willoughby but was thwarted by an undercover officer based in the US, a court has heard. Gavin Plumb, 37, was obsessed with the television presenter, amassing more than 10,000 images of her on his phone including deepfake pornography. He had carefully planned how to abduct her from her home, take her to his residence in Harlow, Essex, and murder her in an abandoned building, Chelmsford crown court heard. ‘Holly Willoughby kidnap plot trial’ & 'IFS scathing verdict' - Paper Talk

    Editorial 25 June 2024.

Tuesday’s front pages have a little more variety than what we’ve seen over the past few weeks – with other domestic topics away from the general election finding themselves as the lead story.

The tabloids lead on the opening day of a trial of a man accused of plotting to kidnap, rape and murder TV presenter Holly Willoughby. Princess Anne’s accident at home – which has seen the 73-year-old taken to hospital, as well as England’s upcoming Euros match also make the front splash.

Elsewhere, politics make up the rest of the front pages with the left-leaning newspapers picking up on comments that the IFS think tank has said Labour and Conservative plans to improve public services are “essentially unfunded.” The right-leaning papers offer up their scrutiny of Labour’s plans if they are elected to government on 4 July.
