The John Lewis Christmas ad had everyone emotional (Picture: PA)
The John Lewis Christmas advert has tugged at many heartstrings, but none more so than the man who shares a namesake with the retailer itself.
This year’s Christmas ad follows a man trying his best to learn to skateboard and improve his skills from being a complete novice who keeps falling off the board.
While onlookers find his attempts amusing, it is later revealed that the reason he is ending up black and blue from falling off is because he and his wife are fostering a young girl whose hobby is skateboarding, and he wants to share a common interest to make her feel at home.
The advert has been widely praised by viewers for ‘reading the room’ amid the cost of living crisis as well as shining a light on two charities which specialise in looking after and helping children in the care system, Action for Care and Who Cares? Scotland.
Twitter’s John Lewis, who gets non-stop tweets from people mistaking his account for the retailer, voiced his approval for the advert and revealed he has a poignant connection to the theme it portrayed.
The retailer tweeted John ahead of the release of the ad to say: ‘This is a public information message for @JohnLewis: Our Christmas ad launches tomorrow Apologies in advance for your mentions, we hope you haven’t got any plans #TheBeginner.’

He replied: ‘Cheers. The ad is great. As the father of four adopted kids, I can relate.’
The store’s social media team were moved by the unexpected connection, responding: ‘Once again, we couldn’t be prouder to share a name with you.’
John’s followers responded to the sweet exchange, tweeting: ‘They are very lucky that you are such a good guy. Hope they send you skateboards this year.’
Others added: ‘John, your legend status just gets higher and higher every year’ and ‘Wholesome content all round.’
Another wrote: ‘How have you just outdone the John Lewis Christmas ad? Did you and @johnlewishelp plan this as a little post credits sequence like the marvel franchise? Made me more emotional than the actual advert.’
