The community of Montecito in Santa Barbara, California has got some heightened attention since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle moved in. But the dreamy Californian community has been a celebrity haven for years. Montecito also has some interesting history.
A fairytale story spanning the 1930s and 1940s when four spinster sisters built English-style cottages, long before women were recognised in the fields of architecture, interior design, or finance. The sisters created more than three dozen pixie houses in Santa Barbara and Montecito. Today, there are only sixteen left.
The sisters gained fame for their English Cottage style homes that used reclaimed materials and had the most enchanting architecture. The homes were mystical and enchanting – consisting of humble spaces, steep roofs set in tangled gardens.
According to Brian Hofer, a local architect, “builders today couldn’t reproduce Moody cottages even if they wanted to do so.” He says the homes may be inefficient, but that’s the point. Moody cottages, Hofer says, make “the efficient house look kind of boring.”
