After a chill New Year’s Day yesterday (Sunday), we also get today (Monday) as a bank holiday.
While it’s great if you get the day off work, you might be wondering what you can do with your downtime.
Specifically, you may want to use the opportunity to get in a New Year shop before you’re back to the office – or simply catch up on chores, as it’s considered unlucky to clean on January 1.
So, can you pop to your local supermarket today, whether for a few bits and pieces or a big food shop?
Here are the general opening times for Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s.
Tesco
On January 2, Tesco Extras and Superstores will typically be open from 8am to 6pm and Express stores will be open from 6am to 11pm.

Of course, times may vary by shop – so check the opening times for your local shop using the Tesco store locator.
Shops should open as normal from Tuesday, January 3 – though keep in mind it’s a bank holiday for Scotland in 2023, so some shops may have shorter opening hours than usual there.
Asda
Keen to nip to the local Asda? Many Asda stores will open from 8am to 8pm.
However, the opening hours for the Monday bank holiday may differ depending on your store – so your best bet is to check the Asda store locator for exact times near you.
Your store’s normal opening hours will likely resume from January 3 – including 24 hours Asda stores.

Again this may depend on the store, so always check online in advance of a late night trip.
Sainsbury’s
Fans of Sainsbury’s supermarket can pay a January 2 visit between 8am and 8pm.
If it’s a Sainsbury’s Local you want to visit, they should be open 7am to 11pm today.
Hours may differ across branches, so make sure to check the Sainsbury’s store locator if you’re unsure.
