‘Missing’ Sergei Surovikin reappears for first time since Wagner mutiny
A recently posted image online appears to show the ‘missing’ Russian general Sergei Surovikin, who had not been seen in public since a mutiny by the Wager group in June.
Surovikin is said to have been close to Wagner boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, who died in a plane crash last month.
There had been reports that Surovikin is being investigated for possible complicity in the short-lived mutiny.
“General Sergei Surovikin is out. Alive, healthy, at home, with his family, in Moscow. Photo taken today,” well-known Russian media personality Ksenia Sobchak wrote in a caption on the picture on Telegram on Monday.
Russian journalist Alexei Venediktov separately wrote on Telegram: “General Surovikin is at home with his family. He is on leave and available to the defence ministry.”
Former Wagner boss Prigozhin and nine other people were killed in a plane crash near Moscow in August. The deaths led to speculation the jet was downed intentionally in response to the 24-hour mutiny. The Wagner boss had been described by many as a “dead man walking” after the failed mutiny.
