Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto is now 70 years old and he’s still keeping busy with the Mario movie and Pikmin 4, amongst other things…
Nintendo’s recent anniversary celebrations have ranged from muted to non-existent (looking at you, Donkey Kong) so you shouldn’t expect much to come out of today’s milestone.
However, it is a milestone worth celebrating, as legendary creator Shigeru Miyamoto has turned 70 years old.
Regarded as one of the most famous faces in the games industry, not just Nintendo, he’s lauded as one of gaming’s most important, and prolific, creators.
Miyamoto is best known for creating the Super Mario and Donkey Kong franchises, but he’s also responsible for everything from The Legend Of Zelda and Star Fox to F-Zero and Pikmin.
While he continues to be involved with multiple Nintendo projects, he hasn’t really served as a game designer or game director in a long time, as he now mostly works in a producer role.
His last credited role was as a general producer on The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, and that was five years ago now.
He may not be a director anymore, but he obviously hasn’t been twiddling his thumbs all this time and has kept busy with new projects.
No doubt he has some involvement with next year’s The Legend Of Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom (presumably as a producer again) but, while it’s not strictly confirmed, he’s likely more closely involved with Pikmin 4.
Aside from creating the series, it was Miyamoto that first announced it all the way back in 2015 and continued to insist that it was still in development despite the long periods of silence. Then, at the last Nintendo Direct, he unveiled its first trailer and release year of 2023.
Miyamoto also seems preoccupied with the Super Nintendo World park at Universal Studios and the Super Mario Bros. animated movie, which he’s also a producer on.
Said movie only recently got its first trailer, giving fans a proper glimpse at its visuals and introducing how Chris Pratt and Jack Black sound as Mario and Bowser, respectively.

Miyamoto also appears to be helping with Nintendo’s next console since, during a recent investors meeting, he was surprisingly open about discussing new hardware.
He emphasised how the company is focused on creating entirely new experiences, that have never been seen before, which has always been his speciality.
