The Independent – Starmer warned ailing NHS is in critical condition
The Independent says Keir Starmer says patients ‘have every right to be angry’ and that some health service failures ‘are life and death’. The paper says a rapid review of the health service, completed in nine weeks, has found that many of its staff are “disengaged” and that there are “distressingly high levels of sickness absence”.
A large image of Kamala Harris and Donald Trump shaking hands ahead of their TV debate makes the front splash. Political expert Jon Sopel says Trump was mauled on debate night.
Tory austerity and shake-ups have left NHS in ‘critical condition’, major review finds
A decade of Tory austerity has left the NHS in “critical condition” with some of the worst cancer survival rates in the Western world, according to a damning independent report.
A rapid review of the health service, completed in nine weeks, has found that many of its staff are “disengaged” and that there are “distressingly high levels of sickness absence”.
The author of the report, Ara Darzi, a surgeon and an independent peer, blamed choices made by the last government for the damage to the health service, and said it would take more than five years to fix.
Sir Keir Starmer is expected to respond to the findings on Thursday by blaming the Tories while also making clear that the NHS must “reform or die”.
He will say: “People have every right to be angry. It’s not just because the NHS is so personal to all of us – it’s because some of these failings are life and death.”
Trump didn’t just lose the debate – he was given a mauling
Would it be the economy? Global affairs? Or maybe a personal sleight that would dominate the headlines after this fiery and unforgettable debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump? No, the jawdrop moment was about cats. And hands up who had that on their bingo card?
So forgive me if this column has a strong feline theme. But as you will see it runs through last night’s events like the word “Blackpool” through a stick of rock.
In the name of precision, I should say cats and dogs, and also give a shout out to Springfield, Ohio as the location and starting point. It is here in this hitherto relatively anonymous mid-western town that – according to Donald Trump – in the dead of night illegal immigrants are marauding through the town and eating everyone’s cats and dogs. No pet is safe it would seem.
Except according to the moderators of last night’s debate who were fact checking the former president in real time, it’s not true: Tiddles and Fido are safe. ABC had checked this claim out, and it doesn’t stack up.
