Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 – now there’s two of them (Picture: Sony)
The first proper trailer for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 closed out the PlayStation Showcase and showed Peter Parker in his black symbiote suit.
Although it was mostly a mystery as to what Sony would show during its PlayStation Showcase on Wednesday night the one game that was guaranteed to be there was Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, since it’s the PlayStation 5’s big Christmas game.
It was the last game to be shown (usually that spot goes to something new and/or unexpected), with a lengthy pre-rendered cut scene featuring bad guy Kraven and then a substantial amount of gameplay with both Peter Parker and Miles Morales.
The big surprise – apart from the fact that they still didn’t announce a release date – was that Peter was in his black suit, which in most media is an alien parasite or lab-created monster that goes on to become the anti-hero Venom.
Venom wasn’t in any of the footage (although he was in the teaser trailer) but Peter already seemed to be under the influence of the suit. He was acting much more angrily and aggressively than usual, enough for Miles to notice and realise that something’s up.
In the movie Spider-Man 3 the same thing happened, leading to Peter acting very selfishly, although because he’s such a nerd he did it in a way that it came across as amusingly pathetic – and led to the Bully Maguire meme.
There was no indication that the game is going to play the situation for laughs and instead it concentrated on all the cool Venom style moves Peter can do now, including shooting out black tentacles – at one point taking out four bad guys at once.
This was also the first time Miles has been shown in action in the new game, sporting the electric powers and invisibility that he has in the comics (we’re not sure what that has to do with spiders, but whatever).

You can also briefly see the new gliding wings in action but most interesting is the glimpse the game gives of how you’ll switch between the two characters, now that it’s confirmed the game has no co-op.
At one point Peter is chasing the bad guys, who are in turn chasing Dr Connors, aka The Lizard, and decides he can’t get to them in time. So he asks Miles to take over and you switch control to him.
Whether you’ll be able to switch backwards and forwards whenever you want isn’t clear, but that’s not how it was portrayed in the gameplay video.
Although everything looked great, some are already concerned that a lot of what was shown looked only semi-interactive, with a lot of QTE style elements and a section where you’re essentially skiing on the East River and where it doesn’t seem like you’re doing much other than pushing left and right.
The game certainly looked good though, with the recreation of New York City being considerably more detailed than the previous games.
Considering how popular they were there’s every reason to think this will be one of the biggest games on PlayStation 5 this Christmas.
