Spain’s conservatives miss out on all-out victory as left celebrates
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of Spain’s opposition conservative party, has claimed victory in a snap election but hasn’t secured the result needed for a parliament majority.
Even with the support of the far right, his Popular Party (PP) has fallen short.
The rival Socialist camp’s PM Pedro Sánchez declared: “The reactionary bloc has failed.”
Whilst both sides can claim success, Spain is left with an inconclusive result.
One positive for the PM is that his controversial decision to call a snap election during a blistering heatwave, when temperatures hit 40C in some parts of the country, proved to have no negative impact on turnout.
Turnout topped 70%, as they headed to the polls, despite the searing heat.
