Spain are desperate to make Manchester United’s Alejandro Garnacho an international star and want him to snub Argentina, according to reports.
Garnacho was born in Madrid and grew up in Spain but is able to play for the South American country through his Argentine mother.
The 18-year-old winger made three appearances for Spain U18s before ditching them for Argentina U20s, where he has scored four goals across five caps.
He was called up to the Argentina first team in March 2022 but did not make an appearance, meaning he is free to switch back to Spain.
According to the Daily Mail, Spain are keen to get Garnacho back and have promised to hand him immediate caps as an incentive.
Garnacho came through the youth academies at Spanish clubs Getafe and Atletico Madrid before moving to England to join United in 2020.
He spent two years in the United academy and helped the Red Devils lift the FA Youth Cup, which saw him crowned the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year.
Garnacho was handed his United first-team debut towards the end of last season and has been fast-tracked this term under Dutch boss Erik ten Hag.
He has made 24 appearances for United so far this season across games in the Premier League, Europa League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup – scoring three goals and making five assists.
Garnacho starred for Argentina U20s at the Maurice Revello Tournament, picking up the Revelation Player award, Goal of the Tournament and was named in the Best XI.
He scored in United’s Premier League win over Leeds on Sunday and was lauded by Roy Keane, who told Sky Sports: ‘He give a good option from the bench.
‘Lovely finish. People always criticise goalkeepers, say they shouldn’t be beaten at the near post but I think it’s a decent finish.
‘The defender thinks he’s got him, but he hasn’t got the pace to catch up with him.’
