Southampton stun Man City with 2-0 win to book their place in EFL Cup semi-finals
Southampton have booked their place in the EFL Cup semi-finals, with a well-deserved win over favourites Manchester City.
It’s a massive moment for the Saints manager Nathan Jones who has struggled with gaining the approval from Saints fans since his arrival from Luton Town.
City boss Pep Guardiola rested his big-name players such as Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland, likely due to the weekend Manchester Derby at Old Trafford.
That’s not to take anything away from Southampton, who played a superb game. Sekou Mara’s crisp finish after 23 minutes, followed by a second goal from Moussa Djenepo just five minutes later when he caught the City keeper off his line and lofted the ball over the keeper.
City threw on De Bruyne and Haaland in the second half, but they made no impact as the Saints defended their lead with a fierce determination to reach the semis, where they will face Newcastle.
There were loads of empty seats at St Mary’s Stadium – highlighting how fans feel at the moment. I’m sure many would be gutted to have missed this game.
New boss Jones will still have lots to do to win over fans and move the club out of the relegation zone. But this incredible moment will surely build confidence for the staff and players – and the fans.
