Son Heung-min batted away Paulo Bento’s hand after South Korea’s defeat to Ghana (BBC)
Son Heung-min refused to be consoled by South Korea head coach Paulo Bento following his side’s 3-2 defeat to Ghana at the World Cup.
South Korea’s hopes of reaching the last 16 have taken a huge dent as the loss has left them bottom of Group H, while they now need to beat Portugal to stand any chance of reaching the knockout phase.
Son couldn’t hide his disappointment after the final whistle as the Tottenham forward was in tears – a situation which was made worse by a member of Ghana’s backroom team attempting to take a selfie with him on the pitch.
But there was also a moment of tension involving Son and Bento, who attempted to comfort South Korea’s distraught talisman.
As Bento put his arm around Son, the Tottenham forward immediately went to swat his manager’s hand away. Bento then kept his arm around Son’s shoulder before consoling another South Korea player.
Bento, who became South Korea’s head coach in 2018, will also be banned for his side’s final group game against Portugal on Friday after he was sent off following the defeat to Ghana.
Bento and his players were furious after Taylor blew the final whistle after 10 minutes of stoppage time before South Korea were allowed to take their corner.
