Solihull tragedy: Fourth boy dies in Solihull icy lake tragedy
The fourth boy who was pulled from the icy lake in Babbs Mill Park, Solihull at the weekend has died.
Three other boys – aged eight, 10 and 11 had died earlier in the week. The fourth boy aged 6 had been in a critical condition in hospital, but it’s confirmed he died on Wednesday.
Tributes were paid to the boys, who had reportedly been playing on an icy lake when it gave way underneath one of them, as the other boys attempted to rescue their friend, they all ended up in the freezing water.
West Midlands Police and members of the public attempted to save the boys, with one officer punching the ice in an attempt to pull the children to safety.
One boy – the 10-year-old has been named as Jack Johnson, but the identities of the other three boys have not been confirmed.
‘Impacted the whole city’
Earlier in the day, footballers Tyrone Mings and John McGinn went to lay flowers at the scene.
Mings said it was a “personal decision” and added: “I think it’s impacted the whole city [of Birmingham].
“Sometimes, as we’ve seen with other things that have happened across the city, there are things more important than football,” he added.
A vigil for the boys is due to be held on Saturday and the local football club – Solihull Moors FC will raise money for the families at its next two home fixtures.
