Harris-Trump debate: Snap polls suggest Harris won fiery debate
Vice President Kamala Harris faced off with former president Donald Trump during a 90-minute fiery TV debate in Philadelphia.
It is their first and likely only presidential debate – a key tool for US politics as many Americans often tune in for the TV debates.
The pair clashed on immigration the border and abortion. Trump criticised Harris’s record on immigration and the border as well as her shifting policy positions on issues such as fracking.
Harris on the other hand blamed the former president for “Trump abortion bans” and for the 6 January attacks on the US Capitol.
Snap polls suggest Harris won the debate, with commentators suggesting Harris was able to walk Trump into a series of traps leaving him angry and rambling. It has been suggested that Trump made at least 33 false claims, whilst Harris made one false claim during the 90 minutes.
Despite a widely panned performance, Trump claims he won the debate saying Harris “lost very badly.”
The US will head to the polls on 5 November, at present Harris has a slight lead in the national opinion polls – but in the key battleground states the polls are even tighter.
