The Federation of Independent Retailers (The Fed) has launched a campaign to lobby the government for security grants of up to £1500.
The money would allow small businesses and retailers to make changes such as improved store lighting, installing panic buttons and upgrading CCTV equipment.

It is hoped these measures would help to deter crime while also helping retailers provide information to police if they have to report a crime.
It comes after a rise in thefts by 24% in the past year with shop owners and staff facing more than 850 incidents of abuse and violence a day.
Their petition has so far gained more than 700 signatures on Change.org.
