The six-year-old student who shot his first grade teacher in January told investigators ‘I did it,’ according to newly unsealed court documents.
An unsealed search warrant has revealed new details about the terrifying school shooting that took place in Newport News, Virginia.
On January 6, emergency dispatchers in Newport News received a 911 call from a teacher who heard a gunshot inside Richneck Elementary School.
Police rushed to the school, getting to the scene four minutes after the shot was fired. When they arrived, they found a school employee restraining a first grade student.

‘I shot that b**** dead,’ the child told the officers. ‘I did it. I got my mom’s gun last night.’
Investigators retrieved a 9mm handgun from the classroom, as well as a single 9mm shell casing.
His teacher, Abby Zwerner, sustained wounds on her hand and her upper chest from the single bullet fired.
The child’s mother, Deja Taylor, was arrested and charged with felony child neglect in April.

According to the documents unsealed ahead of her hearing on next week, Taylor told investigators that the gun was kept in two places: in a lock box or in her purse with a trigger lock in place.
She also told the investigators that she believed her purse was on top of her dresser that morning, and that the key for the trigger lock was kept safely under her bed.
Zwerner has since filed a lawsuit against Newport News Public Schools, seeking $40million in damages. According to her attorneys, administrators at the school were warned that the six-year-old had a gun multiple times, but were ‘paralyzed with apathy.’
When school administrators were warned that he might be carrying the gun in his jacket, they allegedly told Zwerner his ‘pockets were too small to hold a handgun and did nothing.’
