Shock New Zealand win over Norway, late penalty miss drama and Sam Kerr out for two Australia games
New Zealand beat Norway in a 1-0 opening thriller match, which left many shocked as they become the first New Zealand team – men’s or women’s – to win a game in the World Cup.
New Zealand dominated much of the match whilst Norway did get a few chances, they never looked very convincing.
A late penalty was awarded to New Zealand, with many fans thinking the team were about to sink Norway but Percival struck the woodwork.
Norway were expected to be the hardest team for New Zealand to face. But now they’ve toasted their heaviest competition, NZ will now be full of confidence in making it out of the group stages.
An excellent start to the World Cup from one of the co-host nations – who only hours before experienced a tragic shooting in Auckland.
Meanwhile, Australian fans will be devastated after news dropped that Sam Kerr – one of the greatest players in the world – is set to be out of the first two World Cup games with a calf injury.
