Portuguese striker Betinho has laughed off an error that saw him added to the Manchester United squad on the Premier League website.
Eagle-eyed United supporters spotted the 29-year-old mysteriously added to United’s official squad list ahead of Tuesday’s Premier League clash with Nottingham Forest.
While the club are in desperate need of more firepower, the addition of the little-known player who plays in the third tier of Portuguese football with SC Espinho, was chalked up to an administrative error on the Premier League’s official website – with Betinho seeing the funny side.
Sharing a screenshot of his name alongside the likes of United’s forward options in Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, Betinho wrote: ‘Thank you Manchester United, see you soon!’
The striker also tagged countrymen Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes with the message: ‘It’s going to be a pleasure sharing a changing room with you’.
Betinho also shared a mocked-up image of himself wearing the United jersey, enjoying his moment in the headlines.
United are hoping to bring in another centre forward in January with Anthony Martial the club’s only recognised option through the middle following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure.
Betinho was happy to join in.
Erik ten Hag was thought to be keen to bring PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo to Old Trafford but the Netherlands international is now set to join United’s arch-rivals Liverpool in a £44million deal.
Having spent over £200m in the summer, United’s January business is likely to be limited to loan deals with Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix one option on the table.
Jorge Mendes, Felix’s agent, has reportedly discussed the move with United officials with Atletico ready to let the Portugal international leave.
Atletico are reportedly looking for an £8million loan fee and for Felix’s entire salary, said to be just under £250,000-a-week, to be covered by his new club.
United however are said to be reluctant to agree to those terms.
While the club consider options, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial proved there are goal scorers in the squad with both forwards on the score sheet in the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
