Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has told Scott McTominay that he’s surplus to requirements at the club and is free to leave Old Trafford.
The Scot, who emerged from the club’s academy, has been a first team player for the last six years since breaking through under Jose Mourinho in 2017.
McTominay came through the academy as a striker but he’s developed into a box-to-box midfielder.
While the 26-year-old was a regular starter under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Scot has found starts harder to come by under Ten Hag.
McTominay still managed 39 appearances across all competitions last term but he’s already behind the likes of Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes in the pecking order.
Ten Hag was minded to sell one midfielder this summer and it was expected that Fred – given he’s 29 and has one year left on his deal – would be the man to leave.

But Fulham have baulked at United’s asking price for the Brazilian and TalkSPORT say McTominay has instead been told he can leave.
Newcastle have a long-standing interest in McTomiany but it remains to be seen whether United would now consider selling to a direct rival, who finished just below them last term.
David Moyes is an admirer of his countryman and United could even look to include McTominay in a cash + player bid for Declan Rice.
However, Arsenal still lead the race to sign the England international.
