Saudi crown prince invited to visit UK, government source says
A government source has said the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has been invited to visit the UK.
Whilst No 10 said they would only confirm the PM’s engagements in the usual way, with nothing in the diary yet, a government source s claiming there was no reason to think a visit would not happen.
It would be the first visit since the murder of Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018.
Khashoggi was a critic of Saudi Arabia’s government and his murder was condemned by the west at the time. Western intelligence concluded that the prince must have authorised the killing, despite him denying involvement.
The invitation to visit the UK was first reported by the Times newspaper.
