The first look pictures from Sanditon season 3 have been released, ahead of a highly anticipated return to the booming seaside resort town, and the tangled love life of heroine Charlotte Heywood (Rose Williams).
Originally based on Jane Austen’s unfinished regency novel, the first season was created by period drama maestro Andrew Davies, who is back as writer and executive producer alongside showrunner Justin Young (Death in Paradise).
The shock finale of season two this summer, following the show’s revival thanks to ardent fans, saw Charlotte return to her family home and announce her engagement to local famer’s son Ralph Stirling, after an almost-romance with fan favourite Alexander Colbourne (Ben Lloyd-Hughes) and a near-miss with the smooth yet dastardly Colonel Lennox (Tom Weston-Jones).
As shown in the images from the first episode of season three, Cai Brigden has returned as Ralph, pursuing a relationship with Charlotte, with the couple shown smiling at one another during a visit to the beach.
Could they be well suited after all, despite Charlotte’s decision to accept his proposal almost certainly being triggered by Colbourne’s rejection of her, after they got their wires crossed following a kiss?
Lloyd-Hughes is of course back as Colbourne as well, looking his usual brooding self. Has he shut himself and his family away again after losing Charlotte? Will he fight to try and win her back?

Nothing is yet known about the storylines, but we ca rest assured there should be plenty of drama and romance, as always
The final image shows Crystal Clarke as Charlotte’s good friend and heiress, Georgiana Lambe, and introduces actor Edward Davis as new character Lord Montrose.
Attending what appears to be a ball together in the picture, Lord Montose is a dapper dresser, and looks pleased as punch to have Georgiana on his arm.
Could he be a new love interest for Georgiana, after she was almost conned by rakish artist Charles Lockhart, intent on stealing her fortune for himself? She is certainly due her fair share of genuine romance by now.

Many other familiar faces in the cast are returning for the new season, with Death in Paradise’s Justin Young back as showrunner, including Kris Marshall as determined town developer Tom Parker alongside Kate Ashfield as his wife Mary Parker.
Anne Reid’s tour de force Lady Denham is back, as well as Jack Fox as delicious villain Edward Denham and Turlough Convery as the affable Arthur Parker.
Colbourne’s ward Augusta Markham played by Eloise Webb returns, with Kevin Eldon as Reverend Hankins and Adrian Scarborough as Dr Fuchs.
