Sam Smith has shared their thoughts on the uproar surrounding Celine Dion’s absence from Rolling Stone’s 200 Greatest Singers of All Time list.
The hit-maker pointed out that Dion wasn’t the only all time great to have not been honoured in the round up – Judy Garland and Sarah Vaughan were also snubbed – while emphasising that fans are more important than critics.
‘Do you know what, it is just a list, that would be my reply, it is just a list,’ Smith said when asked about their thoughts on the matter.
The 30-year-old crooner added: ‘Also Judy Garland wasn’t on it and Sarah Vaughan, who is my favourite singer of all time.’
‘And I think Celine Dion, and all these artists and singers, they have such an incredible fanbase and that is what matters, the fans, the music and that direct relationship.
‘I try not to read critics, and pieces written by non-singers, I don’t read that anymore,’ they told the Daily Star.

Rolling Stone published the list on New Year’s Day.
Mariah Carey, unsurprisingly, came in at number five, with Sam Cooke, Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin bringing it home in third, second and first place respectively.
But there was not even the slightest hint of The My Heart Will Go On singer, 54, who is the best-selling Canadian recording artist of all time, sparking fury among fans and fellow stars.

Elsewhere, Smith also revealed that they ‘love it’ when fans turn up to their show drunk.
They added: ‘I love it when the crowd are drunk, it is fabulous. I can’t drink though before I sing. I have never really done that.
‘But I am down for people to get drunk and wine drunk is a fabulous drunk and I am ready.’
It comes after Smith confessed that stardom has had a huge impact on their relationships but also expressed caution about seeming ungrateful.
The Unholy singer said: ‘Relationships change and family can change. Money can change that, and fame. Fame is probably the biggest issue I have had in my life.’
Speaking on BBC Radio 2’s First and Last podcast, Smith added: ‘[Fame] is this horrible one as you can’t moan about it [because] I know I am very, very lucky to be in my position, but life does get turned on its head.

‘You have to find a new way to talk to people you love and you lose people you love, which is the hardest part.
‘I was at my lowest in my life writing my third album. I was coming to terms with gender stuff. I felt like I had to live up to this character of Sam Smith.’
