Sam Ryder is probably the most chilled guy in the music industry.
However, the singer, who has been taking the world by storm since his success in Eurovision 2022, once faced a terrifying ordeal.
The blonde-haired falsetto king has revealed he was almost killed in a wipe out in 2018, while holidaying in Hawaii.
Recalling the horrifying moment, Sam, 33, began: ‘I was surfing in Hawaii and my board snapped. Then I got hit by a wave and I very nearly drowned.’
He continued to BBC: It pushed me down so far into the water. And the turbulence of the water, the power, is incredible. Fighting against it, you feel like you’ve been hit by a bus.’
After being battered by the waves, Sam needed a week of bed rest to recover.

During this time, though, he gained a new mindset.
‘Obviously, the golden rule in surfing is, “Never underestimate the sea”, but until it goes wrong, you can’t fathom it,’ he added.
‘You’re like, “I am insignificant in this body of water”.
‘But that day was important to me because I wanted to be very good at surfing and ride the big waves – but [the accident] put me back on my true purpose.
‘I was like, “You can’t do the thing you love most, which is music and singing, if you’re at the bottom of the sea”.’

And thankfully the musician is still thriving on the music scene today, having placed second in the Eurovision Song Contest this year with his hit, Space Man.
After the United Kingdom’s Eurovision reputation was restored, it was announced that the annual event will be held in Liverpool next year, due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, where the 2023 competition was meant to be held.
But until all that excitement kicks off and the final takes place in May, Sam is focussing on his own music, having just dropped an album.
The TikTok sensation (he boasts an impressive 14million followers) will also helm BBC’s New Year’s Eve celebrations with Sam Ryder’s All Star New Year’s Eve airing on BBC One and iPlayer.

The celebration will see our Sam joined by some of music’s biggest stars – including Mel C, Sigrid and Justin Hawkins from The Darkness – with hits spanning the decades.
This whole year has been ‘bonkers’, according to Sam, following his skyrocket to stardom.
‘My feet have just about touched the ground, but not quite.’
