Russia says it rehearsed nuclear strike
Russia has rehearsed its ability to deliver a “massive” nuclear strike, the Kremlin says.
The rehearsal involved delivering a “response to an enemy nuclear strike”, Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said.
The defence ministry has released footage of the military exercise tests.
The tests come as Russia’s parliament backed withdrawing Moscow’s ratification of a global treaty that bans all physical testing of nuclear warheads.
Russia and the US conduct regular nuclear readiness simulations – Moscow usually holds its own towards the end of October.
This year’s exercises included “delivering a massive nuclear strike by strategic offensive forces in response to an enemy nuclear strike”, Shoigu reported to President Putin.
A Kremlin statement said that “practical launches of ballistic and cruise missiles” had taken place.
