Roy Keane has taken an impromptu swipe at Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana, branding him ‘dreadful’, while he feels the west London club have a serious headache in the goalkeeper position.
The Blues ended the campaign with an underwhelming 1-1 draw against a heavily rotated Newcastle United team, who had already wrapped up a place in the Champions League.
They fell behind early to a strike from Anthony Gordon before a Kieran Tripper own goal in the 27th minute tied things up.
The result sees Chelsea stay in 12th place in the table on 44 points – both their worst finish in the Premier League as well as their lowest points total, while they will be without European football next season.
Mauricio Pochettino is set to be named as the club’s new manager imminently but Keane fears the Argentine has a massive job on his hands and disagreed with fellow pundit Micah Richards when the latter suggested Chelsea would be top-four contenders once again next season.
‘I think Chelsea are going to be really good next season under Poch,’ said Richards on Sky Sports.
‘Top four, challenging maybe a little bit more. The players that they’ve got, Christopher Nkunku coming in. They need a striker, they’ll get that sorted, but I think Chelsea will be challenging big next season.’

At this point Jamie Carragher, who was also in the studio, interjected: ‘Who are these players? I know they’ve spent a lot of money but I’m being deadly serious, who are the players?’
Richards responded: ‘Reece James will be back fit. Fofana will come back into his own, he had a big knee injury.’
But Keane looked stunned by Richards naming Fofana as a potential key player, saying with incredulity: ‘Who?! He’s been dreadful, he’s been dreadful!’
Carragher also ripped apart Richards’ comments, saying of James: ‘He’s always injured!

‘I think [Enzo] Fernandez has got great pedigree. The goalkeeper is a problem, they’ve got no striker, [Nkunku] might come in and make a difference, Mykhailo Mudryk has obviously come in for a lot of money, he’s got pedigree but…’
Keane agreed with Carragher that Chelsea need to find a new number one, saying: ‘The goalkeeper is a problem. They need a goalkeeper.’
Edouard Mendy started the season as Chelsea’s number one but his form fell off and he was also hampered by injuries.
Kepa Arrizabalaga has fared little better, making a number of gaffes and failing to keep a clean sheet in his last eight appearances, and Chelsea have been linked with a summer swoop for Inter’s Andre Onana among others.
