Richie Sambora has revealed the difficulties he faced as Jacket Potato on The Masked Singer, including the challenge of playing his guitar when he couldn’t even see it.
The guitar-playing legend and Bon Jovi co-founder was unmasked during Saturday’s semi-final, to various stunned open mouths on the judging panel and in the audience.
During his final show, the 63-year-old musician had taken part in a world-first on the programme and become the first masked singer to play an instrument while in costume.
Obviously, he seriously impressed with his rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way, but Richie has revealed just how hard it was to play his guitar while dressed in such a heavy and cumbersome costume.
Appearing on Sunday Brunch the morning after his pre-recorded elimination – and the morning after a nice time at a Brit Awards after-party – the guitarist told hosts Tim Lovejoy and Simon Rimmer: ‘It was pretty heavy man, I had to get them to put a brace on the back of it and strap it in because they asked me to play guitar on one of the songs.’
Explaining what had gone into making sure that was a possibility, he explained: ‘They cut my gloves off and matched [my] fingers to gloves,’ as footage reminded fans of Jacket Potato’s yellow hands.

When he was asked if he could actually see what he was doing while playing, Richie replied: ‘Uh, not really. You’ll see me – I look down once, just to make sure!’
Impressive stuff.
The star also shared that he thought his fellow competitor Glee star Amber Riley, who was eliminated shortly after him and after performing a Bon Jovi song, was a ‘great singer’ – even if he didn’t know who she was!
He also revealed that had he lasted one more week and made it to the final, he had planned to out himself by playing a Bon Jovi song and removing his head during the performance.
