Reddit shares surge over 10% after OpenAI ChatGPT deal
Shares in Reddit soared more than 10% after the company announced a strategic partnership with artificial intelligence (AI) start-up OpenAI. This collaboration grants OpenAI access to Reddit’s content, while Reddit will integrate AI-powered features into its platform.
The move highlights Reddit’s strategy to diversify its revenue streams beyond traditional advertising. However, the partnership comes amid increasing legal scrutiny from copyright holders regarding the use of their material by AI firms.
OpenAI has also inked agreements with several major publishers, including the Associated Press and the Financial Times, in recent months. Additionally, in February, Google announced a partnership that allows it to access Reddit data to train its AI models.
These developments occur as both the European Union and the United States grapple with the legal implications of using copyrighted content for AI training. The core issue is whether this practice constitutes copyright infringement or falls under fair use and “temporary copying” exceptions.
The issue is being tested in court in the US, in several legal cases separately representing people like Game of Thrones author George RR Martin, comedian Sarah Silverman, and the New York Times.
