There was only one goal in Switzerland vs Cameroon game and it came courtesy of Breel Embolo.
Embolo scored the Switzerland goal off a slick Swizz attack just after halftime.
Cameroon were unfortunate to lose, they had put on quite a display at the Al Janoub Stadium in Qatar.
Switzerland and Cameroon are in Group G – which also features Brazil, so its a vital win for the Swiss as Group G is a hard one to get out of.
Embolo was born in Cameroon but moved to Switzerland when he was a child and pledged allegiance to the Swiss teams after being granted citizenship in 2014.
When he scored, he respectfully raised his arms and closed his eyes – choosing not to celebrate in the usual way footballers tend to.
Cameroon were vibrant in the first half, making it hard for Switzerland. Cameroon had three solid chances during the first half but were not capitalised on in front of goal by the players.
After the Swiss took the lead they had several chances to extend their lead, but a superb save from Andre Onana and last-minute attempts on goal were defended strongly by Cameroon.
It’s now the eighth successive loss at the World Cup finals for Cameroon but the team still managed to impress.
For the head coach, he says the team’s next game against Serbia will be “decisive” if they have any chance in progressing beyond the group stages.
For the Swiss, the win gives them a little breathing space before their big game against Brazil – who are widely expected to top the group and are predicted to win the World Cup.
