Saudi Arabia pulled off perhaps the biggest upset in World Cup history – after coming back from 1-0 down at half time, to winning 2-1 by the full-time whistle.
Saudi Arabia faced Lionel Messi’s Argentina today at 13:00 in an exciting Group C opener game in Lusail.
Argentina were widely expected to win as Saudi Arabia are ranked 51st in the world.
Lionel Messi scored from the spot just 10 minutes in – the team would have three more goals ruled out for offside.
The Green Falcons flipped the game on its head when Saleh Al-Shehri levelled with a low effort and Salem Al Dawsari put the team ahead – causing the fans to go wild.
Saudi Arabia were able to hold the Argentina frontline to see the game end 2-1 – a shocking win and only Saudi Arabia’s fourth ever world cup win.
Argentina had come into the tournaments as one of the favourites, and whilst they are still likely to progress out of the group stages, it will undoubtedly rattle the team.
Argentina had gone into the game on a 36-goal unbeaten run which included winning the 2021 Copa America.
They will need to pull it together and refocus for their Saturday game against Mexico if they want to progress beyond the group stages.
It’s set to be Messi’s final ever world cup and many football fans will want Messi – widely considered the best footballer – to lift the trophy in December.
Saudi Arabia will face Poland on Saturday.
