Priti Patel and Nadine Dorries quit ahead of new PM Liz Truss taking office
Priti Patel and Nadine Dorries have said they will step down from their cabinet roles when Liz Triss becomes prime minister on Tuesday.
Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries was reportedly asked to stay on but, according to the BBC, she wants to return to writing books.
Home Secretary Priti Patel announced her decision in a letter to outgoing PM Boris Johnson in which she said she would give Liz Truss her support from the backbenches.
Patel has said it had been “the honour of my life” to serve in the position. It had been expected that Patel would have been replaced even if she hadn’t stepped down.
Writing to Mr Johnson, Ms Patel said: “Britain had always been a beacon for freedom and democracy and I have been proud to work with you over the last three years to make that light shine brighter.
“All this has been achieved despite the relentless efforts of our political opponents and left-wing activists, lawyers and campaigners.”
