Portugal battles wildfires amid third heatwave of the year
Another heatwave sweeping Portugal has left thousands of hectares engulfed in flames after more wildfires broke out.
Around 800 firefighters attended a fire near the southern town of Odemira overnight on Monday, with more than 1,400 people having to evacuate.
At least nine firefighters have been injured fighting the wildfires.
This week, temperatures of 40C are expected to hit much of the Iberian peninsula.
Spain has bought three major wildfires under control but weather alerts remain in place across most of the country.
In Portugal, Monday saw temperatures of 46.4C – the hottest of the year so far, recorded in Santarém.
