Polish man jailed for four months for punching Danish PM
A Polish man has been sentenced to four months in jail for assaulting Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The incident occurred in June in Copenhagen, where the 39-year-old man, whose name has not been disclosed, punched Frederiksen on the shoulder.
In addition to his jail term, the man will be deported from Denmark and banned from entering the country for five years. The court also found him guilty of several counts of fraud and indecent exposure related to other incidents.
During the trial, the man claimed he was too drunk to remember the assault. He admitted to having a “bad day” and pleaded not guilty to the assault charge but guilty to some of the other charges.
Prime Minister Frederiksen suffered minor injuries and withdrew from the last day of election campaigning for the European Parliament, although she stated she was “fine” after the attack.
Frederiksen, who leads the Social Democrats and became Denmark’s youngest prime minister in 2019, was not required to testify in court. The convicted man will also bear the costs of the case.
