Pokémon Sleep and Pokémon Concierge – everything announced for Pokémon Day 2023
Today is the 27th anniversary of Pokémon and to celebrate there’s been all sorts of new reveals, including the new Pokemon Go Plus + device.
27 years ago today Pokémon Red and Green (Blue was initially only for the West) were released in Japan and it’s fair to say things have never been the same since.
The big news from today’s Pokémon Day showcase was the announcement of two major DLC expansions for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, but there were also a lot of other, smaller reveals.
This includes the peculiar Pokémon Sleep app for mobile phones, which is meant to help you sleep more regularly. Or at least measure how well you sleep, or something. We don’t really understand but it’s taken four years to develop and sounds like something left over from the Wii era of self-improvement software.
Pokémon Sleep works in conjunction with the new Pokemon Go Plus + device, which is also compatible with Pokémon Go and allows you to interact with pokéstops and throw pokéballs without having to turn your phone on.
It’s not clear how much it costs but it’s out on July 14 and judging by the price of the original it’ll probably be around £30 to £40.
Speaking of things that weren’t given a price, there was also the unveiling of Pokémon Trading Card Game Classic, a ‘premium’ set that reprints various first generation cards and comes with lots of cool looking boards and markers so you can create your own Pokémon version of Casino Royale.
We’re not sure how collectors, who often baulk at the idea of reprints, are going to react to it, but it has birthday/Christmas present written all over it, if you have a TGC fan in your life.
As well as updates for various other games, including Pokémon Unite and Pokémon Masters EX (suddenly we’re feeling less enthusiastic about insisting that Pokémon games should have voice-acting) there was also the announcement of a new project with Netflix.
It’s a stop motion show called Pokémon Concierge and takes place at a resort where pokémon come to vacation. The visuals look cute but there’s little indication of the tone from the brief clip and if it’ll have anything to appeal to adult fans.
