Planes sent to collect stranded Britons from Rhodes fires
Flights have been sent to fire-engulfed Rhodes to bring stranded Britons back to the UK as the Greece wildfires continue to sweep the island.
British tourists have been sleeping at the airport in makeshift rescue centres and on the streets as fires have engulfed hotels and threatened the safety at resorts.
On Sunday, another evacuation order was issued for parts of Corfu – some 670 miles away.
Boats have been sent to help evacuate people by sea, an official said.
The wildfires have already destroyed homes and hotels on Rhodes and other areas.
Both EasyJet and Jet2 are planning to send repatriation flights to Rhodes on Monday to help bring holidaymakers home.
Many of the trapped tourists have had to abandon their belongings and travel on foot in extreme heat as fires spread from the centre of the Greek island towards its eastern coast, where many resort hotels are situated.
