Penn Badgley has explained why he asked for fewer sex scenes in the latest season of You (Picture: Netflix)
Penn Badgley might be playing a serial killer who became an unexpected heartthrob in You, but the actor has explained that this season he wanted to tone down the sex scenes.
After the brutal end to the last season, Joe Goldberg has now started a new life in London, where he has taken on the identity of Professor Jonathan Moore.
While the previous seasons have centred on his unhealthy obsession with several women he is romancing, this time around fans would have noticed there’s not as many hot and heavy scenes as before.
Now Penn, 36, has explained it was a result of a request he made.
‘I asked Sera Gamble, the creator, “can I just do no more intimacy scenes?”’ he said.
‘This is actually a decision I had made before I took the show.

‘I don’t think I had ever mentioned it publicly, but one of the main things is like, do I want to put myself back in a career path where I’m just always a romantic lead?’ he added while speaking on his podcast Podcrushed.
The former Gossip Girl actor, who is married to Domino Kirke, also said that he wanted to focus on his family over romantic roles.
‘Like, fidelity, in every relationship, and especially my marriage, is important to me. And it just got to that point where I don’t want to do that,’ he shared.
However, understanding that downgrading Joe’s lust ‘from 100 to zero’ wouldn’t be authentic to the show.
‘I signed this contract, I signed up for this show, I know what I did. You can’t take this aspect out of the DNA of the concept,’ he added.

Penn went on to explain that Sera ‘didn’t even bat an eye’ and was ‘glad’ that he had been honest about what he wanted.
‘She had a really positive response.’

Coming back with ‘a phenomenal reduction’, Penn explained that he was thankful his request was taken so well.
Aside from romance, Joe’s also got a few other things on his mind as he starts to be hunted down by a stalker, who is determined to frame him for a series of murders.
But it wouldn’t be You without some sort of obsession, so we can be sure to expect plenty of twists and turns as Joe finds his next target.
You is streaming on Netflix, with part 2 dropping on March 9.
