Part of the M4 was closed after a pedestrian was struck by vehicles and died

A 50-year-old man has died after being struck by vehicles on the M4 near Swindon.

Police were called at around 6.30pm yesterday to reports of a pedestrian walking along the carriageway at the roundabout of junction 16 for Royal Wootton Bassett.

The pedestrian entered the motorway on the eastbound carriageway on foot and was struck by passing vehicles, according to Wiltshire Police.

He was declared dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

The road was closed overnight in both directions between junction 16 for Royal Wootton Bassett and 15 for Swindon, but has since reopened.

Police said enquiries were ongoing ‘to ascertain the facts surrounding this incident’.
