Paloma Faith has hit out at the new live action Little Mermaid movie.
The blockbuster stars Halle Bailey and is currently riding high at British box offices, and while hitmaker Paloma, 41, was quick to heap praise on 23-year-old Halle’s performance, she took issue with the fact Ariel gives up her powers to earn a man’s love.
Taking to Instagram over the weekend, Paloma – who is a doting mum to two – wrote: ‘Just seen the new Little Mermaid with my kids and while I think Halle gives a good performance and it’s great casting as a mother of girls, I don’t want my kids to think it’s ok to give up your entire voice and your powers to love man.’
The star added: ‘Wtf is this s**t?! Not what I want to be teaching next gen women at all.’
Paloma isn’t the only celebrity to have taken issue with Disney’s themes in the past.
Back in 2018, Keira Knightley told Ellen DeGeneres that her young daughter is forbidden from watching films like Cinderella and The Little Mermaid, where the woman waits around for a man to save her.

She said at the time: ‘She’s banned from watching Cinderella, as the film is about waiting around for a rich guy to rescue her – no, rescue yourself.
‘And this is the one that I’m quite annoyed about because I really like the film, but Little Mermaid [is banned, too]. I mean, the songs are great, but do not give your voice up for a man. Hello!

‘But the problem with The Little Mermaid is – I love The Little Mermaid! That one’s a little tricky — but I’m keeping to it.’Many people hit out at Keira’s decision and she later told the Press Association that she loved the female characters in Frozen, saying: ‘I just wonder what Elsa would say to Ariel and Cinderella, because Elsa has some serious opinions about Anna going off with a guy that she’s only just met and saying she would marry him.
‘She’s like “absolutely that is not OK” and in fact everyone in Frozen is not OK with that.
‘What would Elsa say to Ariel, who gives up her voice for a man? A man, by the way, she has only seen dance round a ship and then drown!
‘It’s 100 per cent amazing of Ariel to save the guy, I’m totally up for that, but what would Elsa make of that? I think Elsa would be like: “Babe, you’ve got to get to know him better, don’t give up your voice just yet”.’
