Pakistan: At least 35 die due to surprise snowfall and heavy rains
Over the weekend, remote areas of Pakistan were struck by freezing rain and unexpected snowfall, resulting in the deaths of at least 35 people and leaving dozens more injured.
Among the casualties were twenty-two children, many of whom died in landslides that engulfed their homes, according to disaster management authorities.
The severe weather primarily impacted Pakistan’s northern and western regions, causing road blockages and extensive damage to hundreds of residences.
The occurrence of snow in March came as a surprise to experts, as Pakistan typically experiences humidity during this time of year.
Mushtaq Ali Shah, a former director of the country’s meteorological department, attributed the unusual weather patterns to climate change. He noted that while a brief hailstorm is not uncommon, it is rare for such conditions to persist for more than 30 minutes.
