Novak Djokovic has been fined £6,117 ($8,000) for smashing his racket during his defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s Wimbledon singles final.
The Serb took out his frustration on the net post in the fifth set when his serve was broken in the third game by the Spaniard, who won the thrilling match 1-6 7-6(6) 6-1 3-6 6-4.
Djokovic was immediately issued a warning for a code violation by umpire Fergus Murphy.
When asked about the incident after his loss, Djokovic said: ‘There’s not much to talk about that.
‘Second one was frustration. I had break points in the second game.
‘Yeah, just tough, tough couple of points. He played amazing to break my serve, which was enough to win the fifth. The first one was the time violation, so yeah. Not a great moment again, but you just kind of have to accept it.’
The £6,117 fine will be deducted from Djokovic’s share of the prize money, which is worth £1.17 million.

Alcaraz’s victory at Wimbledon denied Djokovic what would have been his 24th grand slam.
Ahead of Sunday’s final, Djokovic had won 45 matches in a row on Centre Court, the longest winning streak at Wimbledon since 1922.
‘I didn’t expect him to play so well this year on grass, but he’s proven he’s the best player in the world,’ Djokovic said after losing to the 20-year-old.
‘I haven’t played a player like him ever, to be honest. I think people have been talking in the past 12 months or so about his game consisting of certain elements from Roger, Rafa, and myself. I would agree with that.
‘He’s got basically the best of all three worlds. He’s got this Spanish bull mentality, fighting spirit and incredible defence that we’ve seen with Rafa. I think he’s got some nice sliding backhands, some similarities with my backhands.
‘He is a complete player.’
