Norris Tops Piastri for Mclaren 1-2 in FP2 at Hungarian GP
Lando Norris claimed the fastest time in the second practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix, finishing 0.291 seconds ahead of his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri, solidifying the team’s standing at the top of the leaderboard.
A Strong Start for McLaren
Norris set the pace in FP2 with an impressive lap, clocking in at 1:15.624s on the soft tyre compound. This performance not only showcased his skill but also highlighted McLaren’s competitiveness during the Hungarian GP weekend. After an early benchmark of 1:16.525s on medium tyres, Norris edged out his teammate Piastri, who initially held the top spot after a blistering lap of 1:15.915s.
As the session progressed, Piastri found additional speed but ultimately could not regain the lead from Norris. A brief moment at Turn 7, where Piastri went wide, may have compromised his final lap. Nevertheless, both McLaren drivers demonstrated remarkable pace, creating a thrilling atmosphere as fans anticipate the qualifying rounds.
Tight Competition Among Rivals
Charles Leclerc finished third, trailing Norris by 0.399 seconds in his Ferrari, while Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso rounded out the top five. Stroll looked particularly strong, maintaining his position in the upper echelons of the time sheets.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell placed sixth and seventh, respectively, with both Mercedes drivers looking to close the gap ahead of the weekend’s key races. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, however, struggled with his car setup, reporting it was “undriveable” and ending the session in a disappointing 14th position. Compounding his woes, he is under investigation for an incident involving a towel being thrown from his car.
Looking Ahead
With McLaren showcasing undeniable speed in FP2, fans will be eager to see if the team’s form can be sustained through qualifying and into the race on Sunday. The competition remains fierce, with Ferrari and Aston Martin hungry for points.
