No-fault evictions to be banned in reform of rental sector
A proposed new law in England would ban landlords from evicting tenants without justification as part of a comprehensive reform of the private rental sector. The Renters (Reform) Bill would also remove restrictions on tenants claiming benefits and simplify the process for landlords to reclaim properties from disruptive tenants.
The bill aims to improve the lives of the 11 million renters in England by granting tenants the right to have pets and making it illegal for landlords to refuse tenancies based on having children or receiving benefits. The specifics of the reforms will be outlined in the bill.
The proposed changes would fulfil the Tory Party’s 2019 manifesto pledge to provide a better deal for renters, including a ban on no-fault evictions. Housing charity Shelter reported that nearly 230,000 private renters received no-faulty eviction notices since April 2019. The Bill would seek to create a fairer rental system in England.
