Tesco warns of panic buying in run-up to Christmas without action to end HGV driver shortages
The i says Tesco has warned that a shortage of goods and empty shelves could lead to panic buying in the weeks leading up to Christmas unless an urgent solution to the HGV driver crisis is found.
The UK’s largest supermarket chain sounded the alarm in a meeting organised by the Cabinet Office, urging the Government to temporarily make it easier to bring in workers from abroad.
Tesco bosses said that they have a shortfall of 800 HGV drivers – a fraction of the tens of thousands of vacancies in the sector across the UK.
