The i says In May, the tennis champion Naomi Osaka – at present ranked the number two women’s player in the world – was at the centre of debate for refusing to do media assignments at the French Open. She won her first game in straight sets but didn’t hold a press conference, and was fined $15,000.

The subsequent controversy, sanctions, and threats led her to pull out of the tournament, posting on her Instagram page that the move was to protect her mental health. “I’m not a natural public speaker and get huge waves of anxiety before I speak to the world’s media”. It threw up questions about our expectations of young women, the responsibilities of sportspeople, the relationship between athletes and the press. She did not compete at Wimbledon.
