Kamala Harris rarely at Joe Biden’s side after ‘White House rift’
The Times says as President Biden announced his $1.85 trillion spending package on social care and climate change, Kamala Harris, his vice-president, dutifully stood behind him.
Biden’s Build Back Better project, the linchpin of his domestic agenda and presidency, had been halved during weeks of tough negotiations, not with hostile Republicans, but conservative Democrat senators who had balked at the $3.5 trillion cost.
As he left without taking questions and departed for the G20 summit in Rome without the deal he wanted, Harris followed the president off stage, left behind in Washington as the wrangling on Capitol Hill threatens to torpedo their administration.
