The Super Mario Bros. Movie – wa-hoo indeed (pic: Universal Pictures)
The second trailer for the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie has tanooki suits and fire flowers – but still not much talking from Mario.
It’s barely a month since the debut of the first The Super Mario Bros. Movie trailer and already there’s another one, and this shows a lot more of what’s going on. There’s a brief glimpse of Mario and Luigi’s life back in Brooklyn, as leaked earlier, but most of it is set in the Mushroom Kingdom and it all looks very authentic.
The trailer not only features the first look at Donkey Kong but creator Shigeru Miyamoto specifically emphasised his redesign, implying it would be used for future games.
Miyamoto also mentioned it was the 40th anniversary of Donkey Kong and Mario last year. That fact was ignored by Nintendo at the time but there were multiple rumours suggesting a new 3D game was in development by the Super Mario Odyssey team.
There were no other clues about future games in the brief Nintendo Direct for the trailer, but there were short introductions for Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach (using an American accent) and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.
They both seemed keen, but what will catch fans’ eyes is how similar the visuals are to the games, with several scenes mimicking the side-on view of the original 2D games and including details like the Cheep Cheeps jumping out of the water and the platforms that, unbeknownst to Mario, disappear after you step on them.
Is this how Donkey Kong is going to look from now on?
There was also a shot of the tanooki suit, a fire flower, numerous Yoshis, Bob-ombs, and a Mad Max style Mario Kart race on Rainbow Road.
That race also seems to include several other Kong characters, including Funky and Diddy Kong. Cranky Kong is also seen at the arena battle at the beginning, so all the Rare designs aren’t being completely forgotten.
In terms of fan service it was spot on but what was also noticeable is how little Mario speaks, so it’s still hard to tell how Chris Pratt’s non-Italian accent is going to work. He does murmur ‘Let’s a go’ at the beginning though, so they’re clearly trying to have it both ways.
The movie releases in early April and there’ll no doubt be a third trailer before that, although probably not this year.
